Tips to help your family sit less and move more

We’ve got a whole library of practical tips to help you and your family get moving! Keep it fun by trying out some of our challenges, too.


  • Head to your local park and use the monkey bars for lifts or do step-jumps to add more strength building activity into your family's week. You could even have a piggy back race where you can race with the kids on your backs. Click here to find Canberra's play spaces.

  • A fun way to get active while reading with your kids is to read a book out loud and act out parts of the story. If a character is running, you could run on the spot or around the house too.

  • Play with the family dog. Kicking or throwing the ball for the dog will keep everyone on the move. After all, if anyone can keep up with the kids, it's your dog!

  • Build a small garden together as a family - the kids can have fun and learn as they decide which plants to grow in the garden they helped to build.

  • On long car trips be aware of screen time and switch off for a set time. Play fun games like making words out of other cars' number plates, 'I spy', or you can all sing along to music (making sure to change the rhyming words to make it a funny song).
