Make a difference in your local community

12-Jan-2016

Volunteering is a great way for you and your family to get more out of life. It makes you feel good and exposes your family to a range of new experiences.

There are all sorts of options for families to offer voluntary help in their local community. Have a think about the things your family is interested in or keen to support. There are many out there to choose from! Here are some ideas:

  • Doorknocking
  • Removing rubbish
  • Being a companion or buddy
  • Offering a hand at charity events (morning teas, lunches)
  • Conservation activities.

If you and your family are keen to give volunteering a go, check out Volunteering ACT for suggestions about what type of volunteering may suit you. They can also offer suggestions for young people interested in helping out.

Besides meeting new people, volunteering can help you learn new skills or make use of your existing skills to help others.

“According to a survey undertaken by Volunteering ACT, 95% of respondents said that volunteering related to feelings of wellbeing,” says the ACT’s Chief Health Officer, Dr Paul Kelly. “When we connect more with people around us, our kids will too.”

So, why not contact a community group or charity to see how your family can get involved? By giving a little back, we’re sure you’ll also get something in return.
