Tips to help you eat well

This collection of handy tips will help you and your family enjoy better eating habits. But don’t forget to also check out our ‘Good Habits’ recipes, as well as challenges to keep your family motivated.

  • At the end of a meal, instead of asking "Are you finished?" ask "Is your tummy full?". This helps your child pay attention to feelings of hunger and fullness.

  • Pre-packaged snack foods are often high in energy (kilojoules), unhealthy fats, sugar and/or salt. Limit them to special occasions.

  • If you're going to get fast-food, try to swap fries for a side salad, a sundae for a fruit salad and soft drink for water.

  • Why not join up with a friend, another family or a neighbour and start a vegie patch in the backyard? You could even swap the vegies you grow.

  • If you choose to have a sugary drink, opt for a small serve size or better still, choose tap water instead. You can find 'Water on Tap' at various locations across Canberra.
