  • The BUPA FoodSwitch app lets you scan the barcodes of food or drink items at the supermarket, making it easier to find healthier grocery options. It's a great app to help your family on the road to healthier eating habits. Download it for free from the App Store or Google Play.

  • On days when you don't have time to cook, there are lots of small ways you can make takeaway healthier. If you're getting fish and chips choose grilled fish instead of battered or deep-fried and swap the chips for a salad.

  • Iron is important for energy, brain development and growth. Try to include food with iron at each meal such as lean red meat, chicken, fish, legumes, eggs, nuts and seeds.

  • It's not always easy but try to eat most meals at the dinner table away from distractions such as TV or other electronic screens.

  • Try to limit or avoid sugary drinks. Energy and sport drinks, flavoured mineral waters, cordials, iced teas, sweetened waters, sports waters, sugar sweetened crushed ice drinks, fruit drinks and, of course, soft drinks can contain up to 10 teaspoons of sugar per can. Check to see how much sugar is in all of your drinks and consider tap water instead.
