Canteen Support

School canteens in Canberra today must follow the National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines. If your school canteen needs to move to a healthier menu to make sure it meets the Guidelines, you’ll find plenty of support available.

If your canteen or school would like to access poster and sticker templates with healthy messaging please email freshtastes@act.gov.au.

Check out what support is available for your canteen through Fresh Tastes.

Menu assessments

All school canteens can have their menu assessed for free by qualified nutrition experts at the ACT Nutrition Support Service. They’ll offer advice on how to ‘green up’ your menu with healthy options classified by the ‘traffic light’ system.

Contact the ACT Nutrition Support Service to ask about your canteen menu assessment.

Go for Green guide is available for school canteen managers and teachers to ensure food and drink choices at school meet relevant School Food and Drink Policies and the National Healthy School Canteen Guidelines. It’s the perfect ‘how to’ guide for the Traffic Light System.

Contact the Healthy Kids Association to check if your school is already a member or organise a membership for your canteen or school.

Food safety in school canteens

It's recommended that everyone involved in food handling at school (including canteen staff, volunteers and educators) complete the free I’M ALERT Food Safety Training. This online training provides a basic understanding of safe food handling to make sure any food or drink provided to students at school is safe for consumption.

School canteens, as registered food businesses, must also have at least one food safety supervisor who has a higher level of training. Food safety supervisor training can be completed either online or face-to-face. The ACT Health website has information about the food safety supervisor role and training needed. The Health Protection Service can be contacted on 6205 1700 for more information.

There are face-to-face Food Safety Supervisor training options in the ACT, including:
