Fresh Tastes is a free ACT Government service that supports ACT schools to make healthy food and drinks a bigger part of everyday life for Canberra’s kids. It's an initiative of ACT Health and it's being delivered in partnership with the ACT Education Directorate, the Catholic Education Office and the Association of Independent Schools of the ACT.

Part of the Healthy Weight Action Plan
Around one quarter of Canberra’s kids are overweight or obese. As well as not being active enough, kids today aren’t eating enough nutritious food, and are drinking more sugary drinks than ever before.
To tackle this problem, the ACT Government has made a commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of every student in Canberra. In fact, the ACT Government has set a target of ‘zero growth’ for obesity in the ACT - it's a vision called the Towards Zero Growth Healthy Weight Action Plan.
Fresh Tastes is just one of many ACT Government initiatives that are helping our community to reach this target.
If kids learn healthy eating habits from an early age, it sets them up for a long and healthy life.
Setting our kids up for a long and healthy life
Our kids need plenty of vegies and fruit to help them grow, learn and play. When kids learn healthy eating habits from an early age, it sets them up for a long and healthy life. Schools benefit too because we know that healthy children are more likely to achieve success in school.
The good Fresh Tastes is doing
- provides resources and professional learning that aligns with areas of the Australian Curriculum
- provides opportunities for schools to partner with local groups and businesses
- helps increase access to healthy food and drinks sold at the school canteen and special events, or through fundraising
- improves the knowledge and skills of students and families to make healthy food and drink choices
- supports public schools in implementing the ACT Public School Food and Drink Policy 2015
Fresh Tastes has a vital role to play in making the goals of the Healthy Weight Action Plan a reality - and it's already making a real difference, helping to change attitudes towards health and wellbeing in the minds of the next generation.
